Amazon Prime Day is here and chock-full of discounts on everything from 4K TVs and robot vacuums to massage guns and DNA kits. There are also a ton of discounts on supplements like whey protein powder — and from a number of reputable brands, no less, including Orgain, Garden of Life, and Ladder.

From now through the end of July 13 (aka the end of Amazon Prime Day), you can pick up a quality protein powder at a fraction of their typical cost. We're talking anywhere from 20-40% off, which represents major value when you factor in a product's cost of protein per serving. 

It's recommended that anyone looking to add significantly more protein to their diet via a protein powder should consult with their doctor about whether it's safe or not. Some people who experience low blood pressure or calcium deficiencies could see an adverse reaction to a massive protein uptick.

Protein powders are also not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some brands do incorporate third-party testing of their products to assure their cleanliness and safety (though these don't fully guarantee a protein powder's quality).

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of protein each day is roughly one gram of protein per 3 pounds of body weight. For instance, if you weigh 170 pounds, that equals roughly 56 grams of protein you are recommended to consume per day.  

For anyone looking to gain muscle, consuming more protein than the RDA has been found to be beneficial, but it's important to consult a doctor before significantly increasing protein intake.

Yes, Amazon is a totally safe place to buy protein powder. However, it's recommended to only buy products you recognize, or that show evidence of quality third-party testing. There are a lot of brands of protein powder available on Amazon and since the FDA doesn't regulate supplements, it's hard to say that every option is a safe and viable one.
