Introducing your new summer skin.

As the weather heats up and summer creeps closer, it's more than common for beauty enthusiasts to transition their makeup from full-coverage to barely-there formulas. Aside from using just a few dabs of concealer to minimize breakouts, dark spots, and under-eye circles, lightweight skin tints and tinted moisturizers make it easy to even out skin's texture and tone in one fell swoop. To give your go-to warm-weather complexion products a run for their money, clean beauty brand ILIA just released its latest makeup innovation: the C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40.

The new serum isn't just any ordinary makeup staple; in addition to being totally waterless, it also combines active levels (meaning enough to actually benefit your skin) of notable ingredients like 10 percent vitamin C and niacinamide to calm and brighten, and, of course, broad-spectrum zinc oxide SPF 40 to protect skin against damaging UVA and UVB rays as you wear it. Though the serum is available in only three shade options, each one is extremely sheer and designed to suit a range of different skin tones. Tone 1 is ideal for extra-light to light-medium complexions, Tone 2 for medium to medium-deep, and Tone 3 for deep to extra-deep tones.

For a closer look at how ILIA's new serum measures up against some of our holy grail face tints, three BAZAAR beauty editors test every shade over the course of a week. Read on to see our honest takes.

I used the serum in Tone 1 exactly as directed and applied it directly after my moisturizer and before other makeup. I didn't apply any additional foundation, although I think it would layer nicely.

The product itself goes on smoothly and easily, like a super-lightweight tinted SPF. It comes in just three shades, but because of its sheerness and blendability, I think they would be inclusive of most skin tones. The packaging is the downside of this product for me. I wish it was in a simpler pump container, although it's not "difficult" by any means, just not what I'm familiar with.

The serum isn't inexpensive at $64, but I do think it's a good value considering it functions as a vitamin C serum, mineral sunscreen, and skin tint in one. It's also a good size at one fluid ounce.

As a skincare minimalist, I really like this product, especially how it knocks out three steps at once. Plus, it gave my skin a great glow after using it. I do wish the packaging was a bit more convenient to use, but it's not a deal breaker in my book.

I alternated between using a sponge and a brush to apply ILIA's serum in Tone 3, and ultimately preferred the brush, since it was easier for me to swipe on the product instead of dabbing it across my face. Although the serum already contains 10 percent zinc oxide, I still used my go-to moisturizer with SPF (La Roche-Posay Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30, which recently won a 2022 BAZAAR Skincare Award) to prep my skin beforehand. Now that I've tested the serum, I think my true tonal sweet spot is likely between Tones 2 and 3, as Tone 3 alone was a tad dark for me.

The fluid serum is extremely buildable and glides over my skin like butter. Although its aesthetically pleasing pump design helps it stand out from the pack, I wouldn't exactly consider it seamless to use. I don't love how the bottle needs to be positioned in one particular way to properly dispense its contents.

If you consider that you're getting a vitamin C serum, sunscreen, and skin tint in one, a price tag of $64—while a bit more than most face makeup on the market—is actually a pretty good deal. And since it doesn't take a lot of product to cover your entire face, you likely won't run out too soon, even if it's used every day.

Though I appreciate the healthy glow the serum provides, I probably wouldn't wear it without finishing my makeup look off with translucent powder first to mattify my combination skin, which gets notoriously shiny throughout the day. In direct sunlight, the serum appeared a little too glowy for my personal taste, but with a touch of powder and perhaps a mattifying primer, it can easily become one of my summer beauty essentials.

I applied two finger lengths (an easy way to get the recommend dosage of SPF) of the serum to my face after moisturizer and before my makeup. I used Tone 1, which is for light-to-medium skin tones, but could easily swap between Tone 1 and 2, since the pigment is very light. I applied two layers for slightly more sun protection.

I am SPF obsessed, so I was excited to try this good-for-your-skin tint. Although super thin, the serum didn't slide off my face—instead, it left a healthy glow that lasted the entire day. With a slight tint that seamlessly blends into the skin, there's no fear of a white cast here. I also skipped my water-based primer so that this oil-infused serum wouldn't pill.

Although a bit pricey for a sunscreen, you're getting a ton of great ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide on top of SPF. If you're looking for a multitasker but still want to protect your skin from harsh rays, then this is worth the splurge.

If you're a fan of the ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint but want lighter coverage, or you prefer using a foundation atop, then this is for you. It gives a similar glow to the brand's universally praised Skin Tint, but with added benefits. I tend to get oily in my T-zone, so I will be topping the Triple Serum with a touch of powder, especially in summer months. This will definitely be a go-to for me when traveling since it eliminates a few serums from my repertoire and keeps me hydrated.

When it comes to beauty products, the C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40 expertly combines the best of both worlds in skincare and makeup with its clean and nourishing formula that keeps skin protection and repair in mind. For those with oily or combination types, we recommend layering the product under your favorite powder instead of wearing it alone to minimize shine, and for those with "normal" or dry complexions looking for an instant radiance boost, you've come to the right place.
